Star Trek is an American science fiction media franchise created by Gene Roddenberry. It was first aired in Canada and the United States in 1966. Since its inception, the franchise has grown into a number of films, TV shows, video games, books, and comics, making it one of the most well-known and lucrative media properties ever.
In the original series, the crew of the USS Enterprise, a space exploration ship constructed in the 23rd century by the United Federation of Planets, embarked on a mission “to boldly go where no man has gone before, to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations.” C. S. Forester’s Horatio Hornblower series of novels, Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels (1726), the 1956 movie Forbidden Planet, and television westerns like Wagon Train served as inspiration for Roddenberry’s creation of Star Trek.
